Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
"Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day" is a fantastic, emotional story of loss that struck all the right heart chords. Although Anohana only has 11 episodes to get it’s point across, there’s no problem understanding any part of the plot. Six inseparable childhood friends established a small organization named “Super Peace Buster” at their secret base. However, one of the member of this group, Menma, dies in an accident. The other five kids feel very guilty and blame themselves for the death of Menma, they drift apart and the leader of this group, Jinta Yadomi, with drawn from society and live as a recluse from then on. One summer day, the ghost of an older looking Menma appears before Jinta, and hope that Jinta could help her fulfill her wish. In order to achieve the wish of Menma and send off the memory to this best friends, Jinta gathered the other group member together. The process that they struggled to help Menma move on also help themselves move on.
I can’t stop thinking that the writer had some personal tie to a similar situation like had transpired in the series. It seemed so gripping and personal to me. At the end of this story, none of the characters wanted to let go of the memory they had of Menma, and often had trouble coming to terms with their own personal guilt. I’ll just say it takes a lot to make me cry. Incredible, original and emotional storyline.
All of the characters in Anohana were believable. Jinta, Naruko, Atsumu, Chiriko, Tetsudo and Menma, everyone has their own personality, and this made the show that much better.
The main, Jintan struggled between wanting Menmas stay with him forever and wanting to move forward. At the begin of the story, Jintan is obviously stricken by the death of Menma, and leads a very isolated life because of it. But as the story goes, Jintan opens up more and more to his friends. I love the growth he had even through such a short amount of time. Naruko is a girl which easily influenced by others, hanging out with and playing along with the actions of other girls around her even when she doesn’t agree with them. Tetsudo reminds some people a lot of themselves. He handles grief by putting on a “everything is ok” facade, which the others mistake for him just being a goofy individual. Deep down is more than likely a sad grieving man desperate to make amends with his regret from that day. Yukiatsu kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but his character was still strong and understandably jealous of Jintan.
Besides, the screen of this anime is very beautiful, and the character shape has draw the attention of some of the cosplayers. Let’s see some funny cosplay photos of them:
